Verifying a customer's identity can range from checking their photo ID to more complex verification processes. But how are you supposed to know when an ID is fake? After all, your tellers aren't always going to be experienced in the details of identification documents.

Here are some helpful tips to avoid accepting fake IDs:

Check for consistency. The same type of ID (from the same place) should have fairly consistent elements. Look for the placement of the images, titles, and dates. Is anything missing? Is there anything extra?
FONT! This is related to the previous point. Pay attention to the size, shape, darkness, and even placement of the letters on the ID.
Standard security features. Most states' driver's licenses have at least some security features. Are they present? Check the ID with a simple black light pen to verify this in most cases. Alternatively, are there blatant "extra" security features? For example: key watermarks all over the document, or the security feature in dark bold instead of a light watermark in the background?

Often, you don't even need to get "forensic" with the ID in order to determine when you have encountered a fake. These are just some of the common things to look for, and, when in doubt, you can always contact a consultant for questions on identification documents.
